Dean in charge of Manchester derby

Mike Dean has been named as the referee that will oversee Monday's Manchester derby which could see United open up an 18-point lead at the top over rivals City.

The match at the Etihad Stadium will be the first United game Dean has taken charge of since the Red Devils defeated Newcastle 4-3 on Boxing Day.

Sir Alex Ferguson was angered by Newcastle's second goal during that meeting as he felt it should not have stood, yet, although he was seen confronting Dean about the call, he received no action as the official chose not to report the Scot to the FA.

City boss Roberto Mancini will also unlikely have fond memories of Dean after he handed Vincent Kompany a straight red card for a challenge on Arsenal's Jack Wilshere in January.

Mancini, whose side won the game 2-0, said he thought the "referee made a mistake", and City were ultimately successful with their appeal of the dismissal.

Dean did oversee City's fixture against Aston Villa in March, as the champions triumphed 1-0 in a match which escaped controversy.
