Carragher expects Suarez to stay

Jamie Carragher believes Luis Suarez will remain at Liverpool as the Uruguayan striker continues to be linked with a move away from Anfield.

The 26-year-old has been the standout player during an inconsistent campaign for the Reds - netting a total of 29 goals - and is the top scorer in the Premier League with 22 strikes.

Suarez will be a contender for the player of the year award, and is set for a potential battle with Robin van Persie and Gareth Bale for the accolade.

Despite penning a new contract last summer, many critics feel Suarez could depart the Merseyside club as Liverpool face the prospect of missing out on Champions League football for next season, with the Uruguayan choosing to move to a side featuring in Europe's elite club competition.

Carragher though, is certain their star man will resist any temptations to move away by committing his future to Liverpool.

"He [Suarez] is vital. He is one of the top players, not just in the Premier League, but in world football," Carragher said speaking to Sky Sports News.

"We are desperate to keep him, I'm sure he will be staying, I think he loves it here and the fans love him."

Carragher is set to call time on his playing days at the end of the season after enjoying a career which has spanned over two decades at Anfield, and the 35-year-old feels Suarez deserves to be recognised for his performances.

"It would be a big surprise to me if he is not PFA player of the year. I think the Premier League has been good for him and he has been a star in the Premier League," Carragher said, adding that manager Brendan Rodgers must invest in players this summer.

"It's not just Suarez, we have got lots of top players and we want to keep hold of them all. That is important for the club. Where we are in the league, it's important that we improve the squad and bring in some additions.

"Where we are at the moment is not where we want to be and the club next season will be looking to strengthen."
