PSG cool Rooney deal rumours

Rooney has been linked with a move since United's Champions League exit

Paris Saint-Germain director of football Leonardo has denied claims that the club have made an offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester Utd striker was reportedly close to a deal to join the Ligue 1 side this summer, with former PSG sports advisor Michel Moulin describing the move as a "done deal" on French television.

French tabloid Le10Sport, owned by Moulin, announced the potential deal on Sunday. However, his quotes have generated far greater interest across the Channel than they have within France.

And Leonardo has now taken steps to quell the rumours linking the club with Rooney, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Napoli's Edinson Cavani - but refused to rule out a move for the England striker in the summer.

"On Ronaldo, there has never been an offer," he told Gazzetta dello Sport . "I've never heard anything about Rooney or Cavani either.

"I do not rule out big signings, but only if there is a suitable opportunity.

"We do want a larger squad with adequate cover in all areas in order to avoid the sort of problems we had in January in midfield with all the injuries and suspensions."

Rooney's future at Old Trafford has been cast into doubt following links to a summer move for Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao and Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to leave him out of his team for some of United's key games this season, notably the Champions League last 16 second leg defeat to Real Madrid.

The England international, who was deployed in a midfield role for the 2-0 Premier League win against Stoke on Sunday, has a contract which runs for another two years, leading to speculation that United would look to cash in on him this summer.

And while former AC Milan star Leonardo has overseen an influx of talent from Serie A, he admits the French club could cast its net wider at the end of the season.

"The market is opening up," Leonardo added. "We may look in Spain or England."
