Cardiff could spend £25m in the Premier League

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has said the promoted club could spend around £25 million on new recruits as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

The Welsh side's 0-0 draw with Charlton on Tuesday secured their promotion from the Championship with three games remaining of the season.

Malaysian businessman Tan is keen to invest further money into the club ahead of their step up in division but is wary of over-spending.

"We need to strategise well and we'd like to spend some money - maybe £20 to £25 million," Tan said to the BBC. "Others have spent a big amount of money and don't do well, so we will try to spend smartly."

Reflecting on the achievement and also further on finances, Tan told Sky Sports News: "It's a great feeling. I think we have to strategise how we stay there for a long, long time. We have to do a lot of thinking.

"Hopefully we don't have to spend too much, but Cardiff have waited for 51 years, so this great. I'm very happy that Malaysia helps to contribute to this.

"I think Malky [Mackay] is a fantastic manager. We work along very well and we have a great working relationship. I've a lot of respect for him and he has a lot of respect for me. It's a great mutual relationship."

Tan caused controversy after the club changed their shirt colour from blue to red, but, after several near misses in achieving promotion, the club's owner added: "Lucky red, you know."
