Barry hopeful over new Man City deal

Gareth Barry hopes he can sign a new contract at Manchester City and believes talks could begin in the summer.

The midfielder was a £12 million signing from Aston Villa in 2009 and has been a regular under manager Roberto Mancini, making 26 Premier League appearances this season.

Barry wants an extension to his current contract, which expires in 2014, expressing that he would like to "stay as long as possible" at The Etihad.

"I am happy here and settled," he said. "I'd like to stay as long as possible. I have been lucky enough to feature in a lot of games this season. That's why I'm happy to stay.

"I have a year left. Nothing has been mentioned but I think they've said they will maybe speak to players over the summer.

"New people have come in upstairs and we're not too sure how they work. It's not just me, there are others like Carlos [Tevez] and Joleon [Lescott] who have a year left on their contracts."

Meanwhile, Barry fears his England career is over and revealed he has not spoken to Roy Hodgson for almost a year.

The midfielder, who has won 53 caps for his country, has not featured since being ruled out of Euro 2012 with a groin injury.

In his absence, Hodgson has given a first cap to Leon Osman, made Tom Cleverley an automatic choice and brought Jack Wilshere back into the team when he has been fit.

And Barry, who is adamant he will not retire from international football, admits time is against him.

He told British Sunday newspapers: "I've been out of the England squad for nearly a year and, when you've been out for that long, it becomes harder to get back in, especially as I'm 32.

"I've not heard from Roy Hodgson since the summer. I've got to play well to get back in. I've not given up on England. I've been disappointed not to make the squads."
