Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott says he is playing for his future with both club and country.

Lescott, 30, has struggled to hold down a regular place in City's first team this season and with only one year left on his contract there is uncertainty over whether he will remain with the club.

Doubts also persist over his international future. Lescott wasn't named in Roy Hodgson's original squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro in March, before becoming a late addition due to injury.

With John Terry said to be considering an England return that could push the former Everton man further down the pecking order.

With only four Premier League games remaining and the FA Cup final, Lescott is keen to impress potential new employers as well as his current ones.

"Yes, that is the aim," Lescott told The Times. "Obviously my future has been well documented. But as long as I'm here I'm happy to do a job for the team and the club. I'd love to stay here, but if it is not to be, so be it.

"It has not been the greatest of seasons in terms of appearances, but I'd like to think that when I have played, I have given 100%. It is a special club to me. I've been here a long time and they showed a lot of persistence to get me.

"I feel like we've done a lot together. I'm older now and I'm not naive enough to think I'm definitely going to stay, but if I do then great.

"I don't know about the Cup Final. I have played in the majority of the earlier rounds, but it is up to the manager to decide on the day."

On the subject of Terry making a return to the international fold, Lescott said he realised he must play regularly for City if he is to have any hope of staying in Roy Hodgson's plans for the 2014 World Cup.

"It is up to John," Lescott added. "I believe if I am playing at a consistent level I can retain my place in the England team. I'm sure John feels the same.

"I understand that I am not playing as regularly in the England team because I'm not playing regularly at club level. No disrespect to John, but he hasn't played that much for his club either. Probably there is only Phil Jagielka who is playing regularly for his club at the moment.

"It would be tough to have another season like this. I've only started 15 or so games and that is not great going into a World Cup. If my place in the squad was secure at international level, it would be a little bit easier. I only got in the last squad by default. It was a reality check and it made me realise I need to make a decision and it needs to be the right one for my career."
