Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi says the club's season reached a new low after the 6-0 home humiliation by Liverpool on Saturday.

In their first home game after the 3-0 Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland, Newcastle fell apart against Brendan Rodgers' side, who were without banned top scorer Luis Suarez.

Ameobi, an unused substitute, said his team-mates had lacked the required composure, with defender Mathieu Debuchy sent off in the second half.

"On top of our last home game, that was very disappointing," the striker told the Journal. "The manner of how we lost is the most disappointing thing.

"You start the game wanting to give everything you have, but to then go down two goals quickly to a good side like that, you are struggling.

"Once that third goal went in, it was game over. It's a fact we didn't tighten up as a group. We needed composure on the pitch, and we didn't have that."

The result leaves Alan Pardew's side only five points above the relegation zone following Wigan's 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

With games against West Ham and Arsenal coming up, Ameobi said Newcastle needed to work hard to avoid a repeat of their relegation in 2008-09.

"The players are worried," he explained. "It's never nice to lose like that. But the next three games, we can use this to spark us.

"Nobody is too good to go down, as we found out last time. I'm sure the players understand that, and that's what the manager will be impressing on us this week.

"If someone comes to your home patch and does that to you, it is never a nice feeling. I have seen a lot of anger in that dressing room, which is understandable."
