Wigan have been dealt a blow with the confirmation that defender Maynor Figueroa is definitely out for the rest of the season.

The Honduras international sustained a groin injury in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Tottenham and will miss the FA Cup final against Manchester City as well as the relegation-threatened side's last four league games.

And manager Roberto Martinez believes the 30-year-old is unlikely to be fit for the start of next season.

He said: "We have had real negative news with Maynor Figueroa. He came off in the game really early and the scans have confirmed our worst fears.

"He is going to be out for the rest of the season and probably a longer period."

Figueroa has made 200 appearances in his six seasons at the DW Stadium but has now been ruled out of the biggest game in Wigan's history, when they face City at Wembley on May 11.

Martinez added: "He is Mr Reliable, someone who has never missed any sort of time during the time he has been at Wigan Athletic. Unfortunately he is now going to miss the most important period in a season."

Fellow defender Ivan Ramis is also out for the remainder of the campaign but Martinez said that Antolin Alcaraz could recover from his hamstring problem in time to face Swansea on Tuesday.

Wigan go to West Brom on Saturday short of defenders but with the young Spanish centre-back Roman Golobart back in contention.

Martinez said: "On the other side the positive news is that Antolin Alcaraz is not too far away, but he will probably not be ready for Saturday.

"Fraser Fyvie, Roman Golobart and Ben Watson are also stepping up and they look ready to be involved on Saturday."
