Gerrard can continue with injury, insists Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be able to play through to the end of the season despite needing surgery on a shoulder problem.

Gerrard has been playing on with the injury for the majority of the season, and first-team coach Mike Marsh stated on April 24 that the midfielder would need keyhole surgery during May, which would force the 32-year-old to miss England's high-profile friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

But Rodgers insists that Gerrard, who will lead Liverpool into action against city rivals Everton at Anfield on Sunday, does not need an operation imminently.

The Liverpool manager said: "It's something we'll review at the end of the season. There's no change in Steven's position. He has played with it all year.

"He's been outstanding in his performance level. You can see that he clearly has it strapped up.

"But it's been something he's been able to play with, so it's a decision we'll make at the end of the season with the medical team, and we'll take it from there. But there's nothing imminent."

Asked about Gerrard's chances of being available for England duty, Rodgers added: "We'll just assess it.

"We've still got three games to go. He's very keen to continue what's been a terrific season for him, and we hope that he can."
