Motherwell striker Michael Higdon has been arrested for an alleged assault in Glasgow just hours after he was named PFA Scotland Player of the Year.

Higdon was held in connection with an incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday, not long after he had picked up the award at the Hilton hotel in the city.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A 29-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with an alleged assault at a nightclub in Ingram Street in Glasgow at 1.25am on Monday."

Higdon had been due to give a press conference at 8:30 on Monday morning, but this was cancelled at short notice.

The 29-year-old from Liverpool won the award after scoring 26 league goals for Motherwell to help fire them to a second-placed finish in the SPL. The former St Mirren forward topped the vote ahead of Leigh Griffiths of Hibernian, Andrew Shinnie of Inverness and Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn, while there were no players representing champions Celtic on the shortlist.
