Wigan stun Man City to lift FA Cup at Wembley

Ben Watson's injury-time header won the FA Cup for Wigan for the first time as they stunned hot favourites Manchester City 1-0 in the final at Wembley.

Watson headed Shaun Maloney's corner high into the net to sink City, who were down to ten men following the late dismissal of full-back Pablo Zabaleta for a second bookable offence.

It was a deserved triumph for the Latics, for whom Callum McManaman was outstanding, and fulfilled a personal dream for chairman Dave Whelan, who broke his leg while playing for Blackburn against Wolves in the 1960 final.

But for City it means a trophyless campaign, and raises further questions over the future of manager Roberto Mancini, with speculation suggesting he could be replaced by Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.

The Etihad Stadium club had been looking to lift the FA Cup for the second time in three seasons but, after a bright opening few minutes, struggled to find their rhythm as Wigan

The Latics left Arouna Kone and McManaman upfield even as City pressed, forcing the Blues to temper their attacking and denying them width.

But Mancini's men created the best chance of the first half, with only an outstanding Joel Robles save denying Carols Tevez.

The 'keeper also dealt with efforts from Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri - but Wigan had their chances before the break.

McManaman was a constant threat but, after running on to Kone's pass, he elected to check inside and attempt to curl home with his left foot rather than shooting first-time with his right, then saw a shot blocked by Zabaleta.

Then, 18 minutes after half-time, he embarked on a dazzling run into the City box and was only denied by Vincent Kompany's block.

City introduced James Milner in an attempt to boost their midfield and threatened when Emmerson Boyce got a vital touch to Aguero's near-post flick and Jack Rodwell had a long-range effort charged down.

But Wigan hit the woodwork when Maloney's intended far post free-kick bounced off the bar with Joe Hart stranded, and they had a man advantage six minutes from the end when Zabaleta chopped down McManaman to collect a second yellow.

That was the signal for another Wigan assault.Two free-kicks around the edge of the area came and went before a McManaman burst forced Gael Clichy to concede a corner.

Maloney swung the ball to the near post - and Watson rose to power it into the corner and carve Wigan's name into history.
