Sir Alex Ferguson bid an emotional farewell to Manchester United at Old Trafford - and urged the supporters to get behind his successor David Moyes.

Rio Ferdinand struck with five minutes remaining to deliver a fitting final home victory against Swansea for Ferguson, and the Scot signed off in the best possible way as he brings an end to his 26 years at the Red Devils.

"I'd like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me. The board stood by me, the staff stood by me and the players stood by me. Your job now is to stand by your new manager," Ferguson said in his farewell speech before the trophy presentations.

"I'll be able to enjoy watching them [the team] rather than suffer with them now. If you think about all the late goals, the setbacks and the good times - it's just been an unbelievable experience so thank you for that.

"I've been very fortunate in being able to manage some of the best players in the country. These players have won a championship in fantastic fashion, so well done to the players...I wish the players every success. I know how good you are. You know the jersey you are wearing and you know what it means to everyone here. Do not let yourselves down.

"It's a thank you to Manchester United. Not just the staff but all of you. You have been the most fantastic experience of my life. Thank you."

Ferguson, who delivered 38 trophies for the club, also paid tribute to the retiring Paul Scholes.

"I just want to pay tribute to Paul Scholes, who retires today. He's one of the greatest players this club has ever had and ever will have. I'd also like to wish Darren Fletcher a speedy comeback to our club," he said.
