Brighton have suspended manager Gus Poyet and his coaching staff.

Doubts have been cast over the future of Poyet at the Championship side following the 2-0 defeat in the play-off semi-final second leg against Crystal Palace which ended the Seagulls' promotion hopes for another season.

Following that game the former Chelsea midfielder refused to give assurances about his future, saying: "I've not been in this situation but I don't like it," he said. "It's changed my view completely about everything I was prepared for, so we'll see now."

Poyet is held in high regard and speculation has already seen him linked with Fulham and Everton. He has previously been considered for the manager's job at Reading, when they sacked Brian McDermott earlier this season, and at Wolves, when they parted company with Mick McCarthy in 2012.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed that it has suspended its manager, assistant manager, and its first team coach from their duties. The club will now follow its internal procedures with regard to this matter and will make no further comment at this time."
