Villas-Boas: Tottenham must move on

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has urged his side to "push on a level" as he tried to take positives from a season that ultimately ended in frustration.

Spurs missed out on the Champions League to their North London rivals Arsenal on the final day of the season by a point after they beat Sunderland and Arsenal won at Newcastle.

And yet to finish above the Gunners since 1995, Tottenham face the task of keeping hold of Sunday's match-winner Gareth Bale as there will be no Champions League football on offer at White Hart Lane next season.

"Overall, the season is very good," Villas-Boas said. "We have to keep our ambitions high, hold on to our best players and look at the points total, that is higher than before to get into the Champions League, as a reference for next season.

"We pushed two clubs that normally should go for titles [Arsenal and Chelsea] and we are not far from them. This shows how good we have done and we want to be in their position next time around."

And on the subject of Bale, Villas-Boas believes the club will not encounter any problems in maintaining the services of the Welshman.

"No, I don't think so. It has been an ongoing question. I think it is absolutely fine," Villas-Boas told Sky Sports.

"The reference is there from the points tally to make it better for the future and to do that we need to hold on to our best assets. Today was another great moment of individual brilliance, although the squad in the second half was really, really strong and everyone was pushing for the winner."
