Press Pass Extra: Carroll set for West Ham stay

Andy Carroll has been ruled out of England's upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil after suffering a foot injury.

Carroll, 24, was recalled to the national team for the first time since October 2012 after an impressive second half to the season on loan at West Ham.

But the Football Association confirmed the Liverpool striker has been withdrawn from Roy Hodgson's training camp, although there will be no replacement for Carroll in the squad.

"Andy Carroll has been ruled out of the England squad for the upcoming internationals with Republic of Ireland and Brazil," said the FA statement.

"Carroll had been named in Roy Hodgson's squad that will take on Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday, May 29, and then travel to Rio to face Brazil on June 2, but has now been forced to withdraw through injury. No replacement will be made at this time."

Hodgson will choose from Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Jermain Defoe in attack, with Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley in doubt after picking up a calf injury in United's 5-5 draw at West Brom on Sunday.
