Gill confident of Rooney stay

Outgoing Manchester United chief executive David GIll believes striker Wayne Rooney will still be at the club at the start of next season.

After announcing his retirement, departing United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the forward had asked to leave Old Trafford, but Gill, who is also standing down from his post at the club, is confident Rooney will still be with the Red Devils come August.

"As Sir Alex said at his last press conference, that's an issue for David Moyes. I'm confident he will be there next season," Gill told Sky Sports. "He's a great, great player and the club doesn't want to lose its star players.

"So I'm sure every bit of work is being taken with Wayne and his advisors and the club to make sure that happens. I'm not a betting man but I'm confident when I sit at Old Trafford next season I will see Wayne Rooney running out."

New manager Moyes, who managed Rooney at former club Everton, faces a huge task in keeping the 27-year-old at the club, with reports that Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Chelsea and Real Madrid, are interested in the England international.
