Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has been charged by the Football Association for an alleged breach of rules regarding betting and misconduct.

Townsend, 21, spent the second half of the season on loan at Queens Park Rangers who were relegated from the Premier League.

In a statement on the FA's official website it confirmed that the player "has been charged with breaches of Rule E8 (b) in relation to a number of betting offences."

He has until June 3 to respond to the charges.

As a consequence, Townsend has withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad and will be replaced by Birmingham's Nathan Redmond.

Townsend will receive the full support of the FA and Tottenham Hotspur in seeking rehabilitation whilst responding to the allegations.
