Southall urges Everton off Martinez

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall has urged the club not to appoint Roberto Martinez.

The Wigan boss is currently favourite for the Goodison Park job, but Southall, who made more than 550 appearances for Everton over nearly two decades, said he would prefer someone to be promoted from within or an outsider with title-winning experience.

Other than Martinez, managers in contention include Ralf Rangnick and Vitor Pereira while Alan Stubbs, David Weir and Phil Neville who are all current employees of the club also remain candidates.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Southall said: "I'd like to see Everton promote from within the club or I'd like to get someone in who is completely fresh who has won something.

"I'd like to see someone come in who has won league title somewhere. Whether it be from Spain, France, Germany, I don't mind. I want someone who actually knows what it's like to win the league somewhere.

"What Everton do lack is that little bit of ambition. Everton fans don't want to win the FA Cup, although they will take it if it's the only thing on offer, they want to back to winning the league and being in the top four.

"They need to make sure someone comes in who knows what the fans want, knows the history of the club and understands what the fans want."

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as a surprise contender for the position, according to the Sunday Times.

The former Manchester United striker, 40, is being considered by chairman Bill Kenwright as he continues his search for David Moyes' replacement.

Solskjaer is currently in the middle of the Norwegian league season as the manager of Molde and has been previously linked to Premier League jobs at Aston Villa, Blackburn and most recently Stoke City.

After a spell as a first-team coach at United during the 2007-08 season, he took charge of the club's reserves before becoming head coach at Molde in 2011. He has enjoyed success there winning the league title in his first two seasons, although they are currently second bottom after 12 games this season.
