Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge could miss the start of the 2013-14 Premier League season with an ankle injury he sustained on international duty, according to a number of British newspapers.

Sturridge, 23, suffered the problem in the first half of England's 1-1 stalemate with Ireland last week and was replaced in the 33rd minute before being ruled out of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Brazil.

Reports on Monday suggest Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of the forward they signed from Chelsea for £12 million in January, in particular with fellow forward Luis Suarez still to serve six matches of his ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

It is claimed in both the Guardian and Independent that Sturridge could be out for up to four months with the injury, which would see him absent for the beginning of next campaign.

Sturridge made an impressive impact after signing at Anfield, scoring ten league goals in 14 appearances as the Reds finished seventh in the table.
