Manchester City are likely to step up their efforts to sign Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Ukrainian champions having agreed deals for two replacements on Tuesday.

Fernandinho, 28, has long been a target of City's, however, Shakhtar's insistence that the midfielder's £40.5 million release clause must be met has so far put the Premier League club off making an offer for the player.

But with Mircea Lucescu's side edging closer to completing deals for Brazil midfielders Fernando and Wellington Nem, from Gremio and Fluminense respectively, City are believed to be hopeful that there may now be room for a compromise between the two parties.

The Manchester club are reluctant to spend more than £20 million on Fernandinho, who has pleaded with his club in the past to lower their demands and allow him to make the move to England.

Shakhtar's deals could also pave the way for Liverpool to make a bid for the Ukranian club's £22 million-rated attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
