Roberto Mancini says Edinson Cavani was a long-term target of Manchester City, claiming the Uruguayan was often discussed during his time as manager.

The Napoli striker is reportedly being tracked by Real Madrid and Chelsea as well as City and looks set to depart the Stadio San Paolo this summer.

Former City manager Mancini, who was fired at the end of last season, has confirmed there has been interest from the club in Cavani, although he is unsure if that remains following Manuel Pellegrini's appointment.

"When I was at City I often spoke about Cavani with the management because he was somebody who could have been targeted," Mancini is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

"However, I don't know now whether he is of interest in the club's new technical project."

Meanwhile, Edin Dzeko has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium after failing to secure regular first-team football.

Napoli has been mooted as a possible destination for the Bosnia international striker. And Mancini is in no doubt that the player he signed from Wolfsburg in 2011 would be a hit in Serie A.

He said: "Dzeko is a great striker and he could score 20 to 30 goals a season in Italy, I'm sure of that."
