Liverpool appoint new chief financial officer

Liverpool have named former Hilton Hotels executive Andy Hughes as their new chief financial officer.

Hughes, who will take up his role on July 8, will be responsible for overseeing the club's worldwide financial operations.

He replaces Philip Nash, who stepped down in February after five years in the role, citing family reasons. Nash played a key role in securing Liverpool's club record £20 million-per-year shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered.

Like Nash, Hughes will work closely with managing director Ian Ayre and commercial director Billy Hogan in the day-to-day running of the club.

Hughes originally trained with the finance and accountancy firm Ernst & Young, and most recently was chief financial officer for Guoman and Thistle Hotels.

Ayre told Liverpool's website: "Our financial operations are a crucial part of the club's business. As we continue with our growth, it is essential that we have the right experience in these key positions.

"Andy has a long track record of delivering successful results in a variety of challenging roles. He will be responsible for all of the club's financial management and I am delighted to announce this appointment."

Hughes said: "It's an exciting time to be joining and there is real opportunity to further develop the club's financial operations."
