Liverpool agree fee for Mignolet

Liverpool have agreed a fee of around £9 million for Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, ESPN understands.

Mignolet, the Wearsiders' player of the season for 2012-13, is set to travel to Merseyside next week for a medical, with Liverpool keen to complete a deal for the Belgium international, who has two years left on his current Sunderland contract.

His pending arrival is likely to raise further questions over the long-term Anfield future of Pepe Reina. The former Barcelona keeper is currently on international duty at the Confederations Cup in Brazil, but has been linked with a return to Camp Nou.

That possibility appears to have faded after Victor Valdes declared that he intends to see out the final year of his contract at Barca and leave in 2014, although Reina's status as first choice at Liverpool looks wobbly in any case after two inconsistent seasons.

Mignolet arrived in England when he joined Sunderland from Belgian club Sint-Truden for £2m in June 2010. The 25-year-old, who kept 11 clean sheets in 40 appearances in all competitions for the Wearsiders last season, has played 13 times for Belgium since making his international debut in 2011.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already agreed a deal to bring in defender Kolo Toure from Manchester City on a free transfer and is also set to complete the £6m capture of Sevilla midfielder Luis Alberto, who had a medical at the club's Melwood training ground on Friday.

The £7.7m signing of Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas, agreed in principle last week, will be confirmed once paperwork issues are resolved.
