Adams: Rooney to Arsenal a massive risk

Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams has warned wantaway Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney that he will not be able to adapt to life in London if he secures a move to the Gunners or Chelsea this summer.

Adams, who spent his entire career with Arsenal, responded to the two London clubs' interest in Rooney and believes the 27-year-old would struggle in London's spotlight.

The Gunners' play for Rooney could soon wane as speculation of a move for Gonzalo Higuain ramps up and Adams insists his former club would be ill advised to sign the England striker.

"I'm not sure Wayne Rooney could handle London, to be completely honest. That would be a massive risk," Adams is quoted in the Sun. "I don't think it's a question of finances. I think it's his temperament and mentality. London is a different animal and it takes a different type of player.

"Wayne is unquestionably a super player and I'd love to see him at Arsenal. Technically he's fantastic but I'm not sure about him mentally, off the pitch, and his professionalism.

"I know Sir Alex Ferguson has dealt with Wayne brilliantly over the last few years and I'm sure Arsene Wenger could handle him, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't like to spend my money on Wayne."

Adams also expressed his concern over the imminent offer for Higuain, claiming Arsenal must consider the motives behind Real Madrid's decision to sell their striker.

"My fear is that if Real don't want him, you are coming in under that," Adams added. "If you want to compete with Real Madrid, you don't get their cast-offs. You need the best players in the league to win the league."
