Matthew Upson has put a new three-year contract offer at West Ham on hold until after the World Cup.

With England experiencing so many problems at centre half, there is an outside chance Upson might find himself thrust into the limelight in South Africa, and an outstanding tournament could see him catapulted back into the thoughts of the biggest clubs.

However, should he fail to make his mark on the tournament, the 31-year-old may simply be grateful for the security of a new deal at Upton Park. Upson has so far shown every indication that he will remain loyal to West Ham, but not until after the World Cup finals.

A West Ham source told Soccernet: "He says no decision till after the World Cup."

That Upson has already been offered the deal underlines the fact it is untrue that all the players are up for sale apart from Scott Parker.
