City youth player sent back to prison

Manchester City youngster Courtney Meppen-Walter, who was jailed for killing two people in a car crash, has been sent back to prison after having been accidentally released just days earlier.

Meppen-Walter, 18, who admitted in February to his involvement in the September 1, 2012 crash, which killed brother and sister Kulwant Singh and Ravel Kaur, was due to serve a 16-month sentence.

However, the City player was accidentally released on Monday, just four months into his stint behind bars.

The Prison Service soon realised its mistake, though, and notified police, before Meppen-Walter reportedly returned to prison in Lancaster voluntarily after officials visited his home.

Police sergeant Danny Byrne said: "Officers visited Meppen-Walter's address last night and returned him back to prison in Lancaster. We are speaking to the family of the victims involved in this case to keep them updated with what has happened and our thoughts continue to be with them at this difficult time."

A Prison Service spokesman confirmed that an investigation will take place to find out how the error was made: "Releases in error are very rare and we take any incident extremely seriously. An investigation will take place into the circumstances that led to this release."

The former England Under-18 captain, who has yet to make a senior appearance for City, was also banned from driving for three years.
