Moyes confirms Rooney will stay at Manchester United
David Moyes has confirmed that Wayne Rooney is not for sale and will remain at the Premier League champions.
Speaking at his first press conference as Manchester United manager, Moyes revealed that he and Rooney had spoken "several times" since his appointment and that he was keen for the striker to stay at Old Trafford and go on to beat Bobby Charlton's scoring record for the club.
There has been persistent speculation about Rooney's future since he reportedly handed in a transfer request at the end of last season.
But Moyes has flatly denied that the striker is for sale and has backed him to get back to his best form in the coming campaign.
"Wayne is not for sale," he said. "He is a Manchester United player and will remain a Manchester United player. I see a glint in his eye. He looks happy, he looks like he will knuckle down and get himself right."
Manchester United all-time leading scorers
- Bobby Charlton (1956-73) 249 goals (758 games)
- Denis Law (1962-73) 237 goals (404 games)
- Jack Rowley (1937-55) 211 goals (424 games)
- Wayne Rooney (2004-) 197 goals (402 games)
And although Moyes stopped short of confirming whether or not Rooney had told his new manager that he wants to stay, the Scot added: "I've been fortunate, I've known Wayne since he was 16. I have had several meetings with Wayne. He is training brilliantly well and I'm looking forward to working with him. He looks happy and if he is saying he is going to knuckle down and get it right - let's not kid ourselves.
"We're looking to see how we can get Wayne Rooney the goals to challenge the likes of Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.
"Not only that, this country's got a World Cup to play in next year, hopefully. For everybody's benefit we're trying to get him in a state where everybody thinks 'he's much more like the Wayne Rooney we know'. I'm looking forward to making that happen."
"Let me reiterate, he is not for sale."
