Bayern Munich have officially completed the signing of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona, ending Manchester United's hopes of buying the midfielder.

Thiago, 22, is set for a medical with Pep Guardiola's side ahead of penning a four-year contract at the Allianz Arena, having been targeted by United this summer - although manager David Moyes subsequently denied ever publicly showing interest in the player.

Bayern outlined on their official website that they met a release clause of €25 million (£21.6m) to reunite Thiago with former Barca coach Guardiola, who gave the midfielder his debut at Camp Nou in 2009.

A statement read: "FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich have reached an agreement over the transfer of the player Thiago Alcantara to the German club for a total of €25 million."

Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "Thiago Alcantara was the biggest wish of our new coach Pep Guardiola. We are pleased that we have succeeded in this great transfer.

"Thiago has only just been named the best player at the European Under-21 Championship. He is a fantastic player with great perspective, which will strengthen Bayern."
