Maicon set for Roma switch

Former Inter Milan defender and Champions League winner Maicon is on the verge of returning to Serie A, with Roma set to complete a deal for the Manchester City full-back on Monday.

The 31-year-old arrived in the Italian capital on Monday morning, posing for photographs outside the city's Fiumicino airport before being taken by club officials for a medical, after which he should put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

"I'm happy, but let's wait for the medical first," he is quoted as saying by the Gazzetta dello Sport, which also reports that the player has agreed on a significant cut in salary to return to Italy, the scene of the most successful six seasons of his career.

With Inter, Maicon won four Serie A titles, two Coppa Italias and the Champions League. He was part of their 2010 treble-winning squad, but featured only fleetingly for City following a move there from the Nerazzurri last summer.

Meanwhile, Roma are close to agreeing a deal with Paris St. Germain for the sale of Marquinhos to the Ligue 1 club for a reported €35 million while midfielder Kevin Strootman is also expected in the Eternal City after negotiations with his club PSV advanced over the weekend.

That just leaves the future of Pablo Osvaldo to be resolved. The Italy international appears to have snubbed an offer from Southampton, despite the Giallorossi agreeing a fee with the Premier League club. He says his future depends on what Roma director of sport Walter Sabatini wants with Roma seemingly intent on offloading the 27-year-old.
