Harford turns down Newcastle role

Mick Harford has turned down the chance to join Newcastle as an assistant to director of football Joe Kinnear, according to Sky Sports.

Harford, who worked with Kinnear at Wimbledon, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest, was appointed Millwall's first-team coach last month. He also had a brief spell at Newcastle as a player in the early 1980s and has managed several clubs including QPR.

"After meeting with Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear, I made the hard decision that it is not the right time for me to take up this role," he said.

"It was an honour to be asked to work at a fantastic club and I have the utmost respect for the Newcastle United and its fans. I am currently enjoying a role helping out at Millwall, but would like to thank Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear for the opportunity."

Kinnear's appointment in May did not go down well with the club's supporters and Harford's involvement would have fuelled rumours that a shadow management team is being assembled, making the position of Alan Pardew more uncertain by the week.

Kinnear has stayed away from pre-season training but he is in charge of new signings.
