Pardew hopeful of Newcastle reinforcements

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is confident the club's transfer team will be able to bolster his attacking options with the signing of a new striker.

As the Magpies continue their pre-season preparations in Portugal, director of football Joe Kinnear, club secretary Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr are working on bringing new faces to St James' Park.

The Tyneside outfit struggled in front of goal last season after the January departure of Demba Ba to Chelsea, while uncertainty also surrounds the future of Papiss Cisse after he pulled out of Newcastle's training camp in a row over refusing to wear club sponsor Wonga's logo on his shirt.

The striker is a devout Muslim and does not want to promote the money-lending company on religious grounds.

Newcastle have been linked with several players with Pardew admitting Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis is among them. An offer has reportedly been put in for the France international, although no agreement has been reached between the two clubs.

And while Pardew is keeping his focus squarely on Newcastle's pre-season preparations, he is hopeful he can swell his first-team ranks with some new additions.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "I'm focusing on the team out here, and Joe, Lee Charnley and Graham are looking to get someone over the line.

"At the minute, especially if Shola Ameobi's missing, and with no Papiss [Cisse] out here, we're a little bit light for a Premier League team.

"I spoke to Joe on Friday, and he has some important meetings."
