Scholes urges Rooney to stay at United

Paul Scholes has appealed to Wayne Rooney to remain at Manchester United, despite strong interest from Chelsea.

Rooney has been targeted by returning Blues boss Jose Mourinho, while earlier this summer Arsenal were also linked with the England forward.

However, Scholes believes Rooney would not be progressing his career if he were to switch United for one of their Premier League rivals.

"I don't think there's anywhere better than Manchester United to play your football," Scholes said.

"It's up to Wayne - but he's a top, top player and every player and fan wants him to stay."

Meanwhile, Scholes insists new United manager David Moyes is under no pressure to recruit big-name players in the coming weeks. The comments come on the back of two rejected bids for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Scholes believes the current squad is good enough to defend their domestic crown, telling Sky Sports News: "I don't think there's that much pressure. He's got a quality squad there, with already 18-20 quality players.

"Even if Sir Alex Ferguson was there he would want to sign two or three players. That's the norm every season - to improve the year after, even if you've won the league.

"I'm sure David Moyes is trying to get players - and hopefully he'll get the ones he wants."

And he went on to reveal that one day he may consider taking up a coaching role at United after holding talks with Moyes.

"I have spoken to him [Moyes] a couple of times but I am going to take a nice break now and try and get my head away from football for a little bit," he said. " am going to take along break then see how I feel.

"Obviously it's nice there is something there for me if I want to go back to it. I am sure ultimately I probably will do [take up the coaching offer].
