Defoe unfazed by Spurs' striker search

Jermain Defoe says he is unconcerned by the prospect of Tottenham signing new strikers in the summer transfer window.

Andre Villas-Boas has been linked with moves for David Villa and Christian Benteke - and the club have now turned their attention to Valencia forward Roberto Soldado as they look to bolster their forward line in time for the new season.

But Defoe, 30, accepts that competition for places is good for the club.

He told Sky Sports: "There is always going to be competition. When you play for a top club, you're going to attract top players. It's part and parcel of football.

"It's important that when you play you concentrate on keeping the shirt and it's as simple as that. I'll keep working hard and I feel stronger than ever. I'll take it from here and see what happens."

After scoring a hat-trick in Tottenham's 6-0 win against South China, Defoe was happy to lay down a marker for the new season.

"As a forward, to get your goals before the season starts is crucial," he said. "It gives you confidence ahead of the season and I'm delighted.

"I feel really fit to be honest. I think it was important for me to get 90 minutes today. The boys have worked really hard. We've done double sessions every day and we've enjoyed it. It was a good win."

Villas-Boas was also happy with Defoe's contribution not just in front of goal, but all over the pitch.

"He's a deadly striker in the box. And today, not only with his hat-trick but also with his assisting, he showed how unselfish he is also in front of goal.

"It's good for the team - co-operation, teamwork and ethics - and a great result."
