David Moyes has played down any idea of a feud with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho, who had been tipped to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford before the former Everton manager got the job, is trying to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United while Moyes is adamant he will not sell the England striker.

And Moyes appeared to welcome the prospect of verbal warfare with Mourinho when asked about mind games on July 20 by replying: "Bring it on."

But the United manager has been quick to state how much he respects Mourinho, who won the Premier League twice in his first spell at Stamford Bridge and is a Champions League winner with both Porto and Inter.

"Jose Mourinho is a tremendous manager," Moyes said. "He has done really well in the Premier League. Like me, he started doing his coaching badges in Scotland and whilst I wouldn't say I know him that well, I do know him."

Moyes revealed he was quick to commiserate with Mourinho when the Portuguese was sacked by Chelsea in 2007.

"I remember when he lost his job I wrote him a letter," he added. "So, for people to say there is any feud is wrong.

"Of course, you are going to find two really competitive managers. When our teams play we will both be highly committed to make sure our clubs win. But I admire him for how well he has done as a manager."
