Manchester United are preparing to launch a £25 million bid for Luka Modric from Real Madrid in the light of their other transfer options drying up.

Attempts to sign players such as Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas have come to nothing and now David Moyes is believed to be going after Modric, who has been unable to command a regular first-team place following his transfer from Tottenham.

Modric has been considered by United before but his moderate goalscoring record has until now proved a stumbling block.

According to a report in the Times, he did not feature on their shopping list at the start of the summer but the lack of other options has meant the club have reviewed their position.

Although Modric said midway through last season he would welcome a return to the Premier League, the new management at Madrid seems to have been welcomed by him and he may be less inclined to move, especially if attempts to sign Bale do not come off.
