Fulham raise bid for Darren Bent

Darren Bent is edging closer to an exit from Aston Villa after Fulham improved their offer for the striker on Monday.

Both Fulham and Newcastle are attempting to sign Bent after he was made an outcast at Villa. However, Fulham last week revealed they would not be pursuing their interest in him, saying his wage demands were too high.

But now according to the Times Fulham have offered £6 million, £2 million more than their initial bid at the weekend.

Bent signed for Villa back in January 2011 for a record £24 million and still has two years remaining on his contract.

But the 29-year-old did not feature in manager Paul Lambert's plans during the last campaign, losing his place up front to Christian Benteke, and his inevitable exit seems to be close with both Fulham and Newcastle showing the most interest.

Newcastle appeared to be leading the chase to snap up Bent when Fulham looked to be out of the running. The Times reports that Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear will meet with representatives of Bent this week to try and finalise a deal.
