Alan Pardew is confident Newcastle will finally see progress in their attempt to sign a new striker this week, and refused to rule out a renewed bid for Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Magpies boss has been desperate to supplement his forward line this summer after the club finished last season as one of the Premier League's lowest scorers. Having identified a number of potential acquisitions, Pardew has left the negotiating in the hands of the club's director of football Joe Kinnear.

Speaking after his side's 2-0 victory over St Mirren, the 52-year-old said he believes the club's first new recruit could be arriving imminently.

"I'm hoping something happens before Rangers," he told the Journal. "I think that's a realistic deadline for my team in the background to hopefully get something done. You can only be as confident as the feeling that you're getting, and the feeling I'm getting at the moment is we're pursuing and at the end of the day we'll get something."

That 'something' could turn out to be France international Gomis. The striker is adamant he is leaving current club Lyon this summer and has endured a fractious relationship with owner Jean-Michele Aulas of late.

With the player blaming Aulas for demanding too high a fee from Newcastle, the Lyon owner has in turn blamed the player for excessive wage demands. Currently in deadlock, Newcastle's offer to the French club remains on the table, with Pardew unwilling to rule out Gomis arriving in the near future.

"All I would say is that we're keeping our options open regarding strikers because we can only do a deal that's right," Pardew said. "If a deal is right we'll do it, if a deal's not right we won't do it."

Also linked with moves for Aston Villa's Darren Bent and Loic Remy, concern has mounted in recent weeks among fans that the club could miss out on all three of their potential targets. However, Pardew believes that the club will continue to work towards securing all three of his summer targets.

"I'm not concerned about any of them slipping away," he told the Chronicle: "I think that we are in the market still. We will pay what we think is the right price. We've done that ever since we have been here. We have always managed to get somebody over the line and I think we will this time. They [Gomis, Bent and Remy] are all very much on the radar. We will pursue them until we get them."
