Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is wary of taking "risks" with Frank Lampard's fitness as he looks to ensure the midfielder is available for the start of the Premier League season.

Lampard, 35, is struggling with an Achilles injury and missed all three of the Blues' matches in Asia, and was again absent as Chelsea beat Inter Milan 2-0 in Indianapolis.

Mourinho, who recently said Lampard will play a less regular role in the first-team this coming season, is however hopeful the England international will soon make his return.

"Frank is recovering but of course we don't want to take risks," Mourinho is quoted as saying in the Telegraph. "Hopefully he plays on the tour, I won't say the second match but maybe the third or fourth."

Lampard scored 15 goals in 29 Premier League games last season, surpassing Bobby Tambling's all-time goalscoring record for the club in the process.
