Hamburg appear to have withdrawn their interest in Nikica Jelavic after they revealed the Everton man will be too expensive to sign.

The German side have been linked with Jelavic, with recent reports suggesting they were considering a bid to bring the striker to the Bundesliga.

However, a fee close to £6 million looks to be the price that Everton would want for the Croatia international, and Hamburg have now said they will not be pursuing their interest.

"It is still a fact we first have to sell a couple of players before we can dig into buying any new," Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer told Bild.

"And as far as I am concerned we will be unable to finance a deal with Everton FC for him [Jelavic]."

At the beginning of the week, Kreuzer said it "would be great" if a transfer materialised, but the potential asking price remains too high for a club who need to reduce annual wages to £35m.

Jelavic's future at Everton has been questioned as he struggled for form last season, and with new manager Roberto Martinez bringing in forwards Arouna Kone and Gerard Deulofeu his place in Everton's starting line-up may not be guaranteed.
