Ferdinand won't make way at United

Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester United's young defenders that he will not give up his place in the team without a fight.

The 34-year-old is the oldest of the five centre-backs in David Moyes' squad, with Nemanja Vidic the other experienced player and Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones constituting the next generation.

But veteran Ferdinand established himself as the first choice last season, making 34 appearances and being voted a member of the PFA Team of the Year.

While Ferdinand expects a challenge to stay in the side, he is determined not to make way.

"It was the same last season," he said. "There is a great history and it is part of the club with young players coming through and establishing themselves and I am all for that, but I want to play games.

"I want to play for Man United and the young lads are going to have to fight to get in the team just like I did when I was a kid.

"Now it is roles reversed but it is obvious if you want to win things you have to have rivalry within the squad and it is done the right way here - whoever gets the shirt is supported by everyone."
