Football League new boys Newport County caused the upset of the night as Brighton & Hove Albion were one of four Championship teams to fall to lower league opposition in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The Welsh side marked their return to the competition with a stunning 3-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

Ashley Barnes had given last season's Championship play-off semi-finalists a 17th minute lead before substitute Danny Crow sent the game into extra time with a glancing header. Crow gave Newport the lead in the first half of the added 30 minutes before Connor Washington made sure of the result.

Middlesbrough were also stunned by a fourth tier side, beaten 2-1 by Accrington Stanley at the Riverside.

The hosts took an early lead through Lukas Jutkiewicz before Marcus Carver equalised and Piero Mingoia notched a late winner for the team currently rock bottom of League 2 after being routed 4-1 on the opening day of the season by Newport.

Ten-man Sheffield Wednesday were also sent tumbling as they crashed out 2-1 at League 1 Rotherham thanks to a winner from Lee Frecklington, while Stevenage cruised past a lacklustre Ipswich Town thanks to goals from Jordan Burrow and Filipe Morais.

There was also an upset at the Globe Arena, where Morecambe beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 thanks to a spectacular free-kick from Ryan Williams.

Elsewhere, last season's finalists Bradford City fell at the first hurdle thanks to a 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town.
