Chelsea have dismissed an approach from Barcelona for David Luiz and told them not to bother coming back with an increase to their £35 million bid.

The Daily Mail reported that the offer was brusquely rejected by Chelsea and the message was sent out that the player was not for sale at any price.

Jose Mourinho went out of his way to praise Luiz. "David has come back with us fantastically and we have to use his quality," he told the Daily Mirror. "He has big self-confidence and self-esteem, especially when he comes up from the back with the ball.

Barcelona, however, seem to be of the view that this is just a move to increase the price and are looking at alternatives with Liverpool's Daniel Agger the favourite. Liverpool have also said their player is not for sale.

The Daily Mail yesterday reported that Barcelona football director Raul Sanllehi was in London to meet with Luiz's agent Giuliano Bertolucci and that Chelsea had privately indicated a fee of nearer £40 million was needed. That would represent a substantial profit on a player signed for £21 million in 2011.
