Giggs ready for tough start

Ryan Giggs has insisted he is not concerned that Manchester United's title rivals are outspending them, saying David Moyes' men have the quality to retain their Premier League crown.

New manager Moyes, whose side beat Wigan 2-0 to win the Community Shield, has endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market, with attempts to sign Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara failing and Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela his only addition so far.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have spent around £90 million on Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic, while Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has recruited Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer.

But player-coach Giggs, who has won a record 13 league titles, is adamant that United do not need to buy to be champions again.

"Obviously Mourinho has come into Chelsea, and City are spending quite a bit of money, but it is not something we are worried about," he told PA Sport.

"We are the champions. We know it's not easy to defend the trophy, but we have experienced it before and we will try to do it again this season. The quality is in the squad. We showed that last year -- now we have to show it again.

"I think it has been a slow transfer window. I said City had done their business early on but, other than that, there has not been a lot of movement. It could be a hectic last two weeks. We will just have to wait and see.

"If we sign someone, great. If not, we will just get on with it. We are quite happy with the players in our dressing room. We won the league with those players, and we are looking forward to the start of the season."
