Arsenal target Luiz Gustavo has agreed to join Wolfsburg, according to reports in Germany.

Gustavo, the Bayern Munich midfielder, has become surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena, following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona.

Arsenal had reportedly tabled a £17 million bid for Gustavo, who won the Confederations Cup with Brazil this summer, while Gustavo himself said he "would like to play for them".

However, German newspaper Die Welt claim Gustavo, 26, has opted to remain in the Bundesliga and move to Wolfsburg.

Die Welt state that Gustavo is keen to leave Bayern to enhance his chances of featuring in next summer's World Cup in his homeland.

Gustavo had talked up a move to Arsenal earlier in the week. "I have heard about the Arsenal interest," he said, "It's a big club we're talking about here, so of course I'd like to play for them."

Last month Arsenal missed out on Gonzalo Higuain, who joined Napoli from Real Madrid, while they have so far been frustrated in their attempts to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool. Yayo Sanogo, the France Under-21 international brought in on a free transfer from Auxerre, remains Arsenal's only signing this summer.
