Manchester City face an anxious wait to discover how long captain Vincent Kompany will be sidelined by what manager Manuel Pellegrini called "a serious injury".

The defender limped off in their 4-0 win over Newcastle with a groin problem and will be assessed by the club's doctors today. It could leave City with a defensive injury crisis as Micah Richards joined Kompany on the treatment table and Joleon Lescott is now the only fit central defender at Pellegrini's disposal.

Pellegrini said: "I can't say exactly what happened with him [Kompany]. Tomorrow [Tuesday] the doctor will say but I think it is a serious injury, maybe for one or two weeks."

It might mean Pellegrini, who was already considering moving for reinforcements at the back, is likelier to enter the transfer market. He is also without Matija Nastasic, who suffered an ankle injury in the pre-season Barclays Asia Trophy, though the Serb is back in training.

City allowed Kolo Toure, who had been Kompany's deputy, to leave the Etihad Stadium in the summer while the versatile Richards confirmed he is also sidelined. "Micah missed out tonight after picking up a hamstring strain in training yesterday but he'll be back in action in a few weeks!" read a post on his official Twitter site.
