AC Milan took a step towards the Champions League group stage after a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven, with Stephan El Shaarawy grabbing a vital away goal.

Milan went ahead against the run of play, Ignazio Abate delivering a dangerous ball into the box with El Shaarawy in the middle to convert past Jeroen Zoet in goal with a quarter of an hour gone.

But PSV levelled on the hour when Tim Matavz stooped to head in the follow up from Jeffrey Bruma's shot, which was spilled by Christian Abbiati.

Volleys from Antoine Griezmann and Haris Seferovic, in the 17th and 50th minutes respectively, gave Real Sociedad a vital 2-0 first-leg lead against Lyon to take back to Spain.

Roman Shirokov's hat-trick put Zenit St Petersburg well on their way to the group stage as they ran out 4-1 winners away to Pacos Ferreira. Shirokov put Zenit in front shortly before the half-hour mark, with Andre Leao equalising in the 58th minute. But Shirokov restored Zenit's lead two minutes later, with Matias Degra scoring an own goal five minutes before time to make it 3-1. Shirokov then completed his treble in injury time.

Viktoria Plzen will take a 3-1 lead into their second leg at Maribor. Marian Cisovsky reacted quickest to Tomas Wagner's cross-shot to put Plzen in front early on with Vladimir Darida adding the second on 58 minutes. Ales Mejac pulled one back for Maribor in the 66th minute but Michal Duris's injury-time strike puts Plzen in the driving seat.

Earlier in the day, Celtic's hopes of qualifying for the group stage were hit by a 2-0 defeat against Shakhter Karagandy in Kazakhstan, with goals in either half from Andrei Finonchenko and Sergei Khizhnichenko.
