ESPN FC: Rooney set to stay in red?

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic believes Wayne Rooney has no need to leave Old Trafford as he still enjoys the unconditional support of the club's fans.

Chelsea have publicly courted Rooney all summer but United have rejected two bids for the striker and now appear likely to hold on to him, with a new contract reportedly imminent.

The England international was believed to have been angling for a move to Stamford Bridge, leading to uncertainty about the reception he would receive from the United faithful in his first home appearance of the season.

In the event, Rooney was enthusiastically cheered by United supporters during a man of the match display in the goalless draw.

And United captain Vidic said: "I don't think there was any question he'd have been supported. Wayne has been supported throughout the years.

"He has scored so many goals and won so many trophies -- I expected him to get a good reception. The fans have always supported the players. Wayne is no different."

Vidic now hopes Rooney is ready to put the summer speculation behind him and enjoy a fruitful campaign for the Premier League champions.

"Wayne has trained really well and when he starts a few games he'll be really good," Vidic said. "I'm excited for him -- he can have a good season and has the World Cup as well."

Next up for Vidic and United is a meeting with Liverpool this Sunday and despite having been sent off twice against them, the skipper is relishing the prospect of a trip to Anfield.

"It is always tough to go there," Vidic said. "It is going to be no different this year. They have started well with two wins and they have some confidence.

"But we are pleased with our form too and we will be ready. All the players enjoy playing in those derby games. They are the games you want to be on the pitch for."
