Newcastle rekindle interest in Gomis and Ba
Newcastle Utd have rekindled their interest in signing Lyon striker Bafetmibi Gomis and could bring former player Demba Ba back to the club on loan, sources have told ESPN.
Newcastle have been desperate to secure a second striker since agreeing a loan deal with Queens Park Rangers for Loic Remy in early August. That deal was followed by a bid of around £7 million for Gomis being accepted before the planned move stalled.
Gomis is in the final year of his contract with Lyon and, after refusing to sign an extension, was ostracised from the squad.
Complications over both a sell-on percentage due to his former club Saint Etienne and a fee for his agents had hit hopes of a deal, and Lyon chairman Jean Michele Aulas indicated that Gomis would return to the first team squad.
This led Newcastle to retract their bid but - with less than a week left until the transfer window closes - they are understood to have reopened discussions.
Meanwhile, Ba has emerged as a surprise target after having left in January. He moved to Chelsea for £7 million after a stellar 18 months at St James' Park, but has found first-team opportunities limited.
With the two clubs beginning discussions over a loan, it remains to be seen whether Ba would be open to a return to the north-east.
