Flamini re-signs for Arsenal

Mathieu Flamini has re-signed for Arsenal five years after leaving the club for AC Milan, the Gunners have announced.

The versatile 29-year-old returns to the London club as a free agent after he was released by the Rossoneri at the end of his contract last season. He had been back at the club's London Colney training ground, working with the rest of the squad to maintain his fitness before the deal was announced.

The former Marseille youth player made 153 appearances for Arsenal between 2004 and 2008, during which time he lifted the FA Cup in 2005 - the Gunners' last major trophy - and was also a part in the side which reached the Champions League final the following year.

"We're very pleased Mathieu has agreed to re-join us," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the club's official website. "He is a player of real quality, with a fantastic work rate and great mentality.

"As we know, Mathieu is a strong midfielder, but is also is comfortable playing in defence too. He is a very good addition to our squad."

Flamini is only the second addition to Arsenal's first-team squad this summer, following the arrival of France Under-21 international forward Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre
