APOEL replace Fenerbahce in Europa League

ESPN FC: Fenerbahce handed two-year ban


APOEL FC have replaced banned side Fenerbahce in the group stage of the Europa League.

Turkish side Fenerbahce were removed from European competition as part of a match-fixing case related to the 2011 Super Lig title.

Fenerbahce had taken part in a Champions League play-off against Arsenal, which they lost 5-0 on aggregate, before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the club's two-year UEFA ban.

Their replacement was decided at a UEFA draw held on Friday morning, with Cypriot side APOEL the chosen team.

Turkish club Besiktas have also been excluded from the Europa League after CAS upheld a UEFA-imposed one-year ban from European competition for match-fixing.

The UEFA Emergency Panel has decided to reinstate Tromso, whom Besiktas beat 3-2 on aggregate, meaning the Norwegian outfit will be part of Friday's UEFA Europa League group stage draw.

Meanwhile, the remainder of AZ Alkmaar's meeting with Atromitos will be played on Friday at 10am BST, after the second leg was abandoned due to a fire breaking out at the AFAS Stadion.

Atromitos are trailing 3-2 on aggregate, with 33 minutes remaining of the tie to be played out versus AZ, who are down to ten men after Markus Henriksen was sent off in the second minute.

Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea will be in Friday's draw after comfortable qualifying wins.
